ASPEN NEWS

October 17, 2012

We have a new Aspen “family member”.  He’s the king of streaming, Hank Neuberger and he’s speaking in Aspen.  Check this out.  http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/permalink/2012/121015acl

You won’t just love the Aspen Live Conference (December 13-16) because it has been around for 16-years.  You won’t just love the people, atmosphere, meetings, social events, speakers, and more.  You will love being part of this family of ours.

16-years of doing business together, hearing from some of the greatest minds of our time, and most importantly, each of us having Aspen in common.  That’s what’s made this event so special for all these years. You could think about it another way, half our group doesn’t ski or board.  They actually come to meet people, talk about ideas and bring a fresh approach to the New Year.  But we learned early on, what’s most important is the hang.

2012 promises more of the same.  If you have anything to do with the music space, or touch music in anyway, register today @ http://www.aspenlive.com.   You won’t regret it.  Use a “life-line” and call a friend that’s attended.  They will tell you the same.

So here’s some of the dirt.  Scott Tobias and the Voice Media Group are bringing back the Aspen Billiards party.  Something we have all missed for years is now scheduled for Friday, December 14th @ Aspen Billiards and Eric’s Bar from 7:30 – 9:30pm.

Adler Integrated Media will be working the full-court press on their “Aspen Integrated” day Saturday, December 15th, and will start the meeting portion of the event Thursday, December 13th with “Inside The Agent’s Studio”, the guest… The Agency Group’s North American President, Steve Martin… the moderator, Square Peg Concert’s Dan Steinberg.

This year, we have the guy who not only invented online ticketing; he has had second chance with the dice with Ticketfly, who now has over 500 clients and a whole bunch of new funding.  We will hear from Ticketfly’s CEO, Andrew Dreskin

For those of you who come in Wednesday, there is the annual Peter Tempkins hosted dinner @ Hickory House (our Vegan family members may want to bring a snack), Thursday, December 13th after our meetings, our town host Michael Goldberg and his staff at the Belly Up will be throwing down from 7-9PM.

And believe it or not, there’s more to be announced soon so stay tuned.

Hope to see in Aspen!

Jim

SETH ON CONNECTING

September 5, 2012

For years, I’ve tried to get many of you reading this to attend the Aspen Live Conference http://www.aspenlive.com.  Each year, we have 3-simple goals… 1) You connect with at least one new business friend; 2) You reconnect with someone you haven’t done business with for years; 3) You come home with at least one new idea that you can immediately implement to help your business grow.

Seth Godin (everyone’s favorite marketing genius) always has words of wisdom in his blog.  He writes every day, which is one hell of a commitment, and the knowledge he shares is always worth reading.  You should sign-up for his daily blog, read his books and if you have the time and money, attend one of his lectures/classes (he is speaking @ Pollstar this year).  Even if you don’t see yourself as a marketer, you are.

Here’s a link to Seth’s blog from today http://tinyurl.com/d3e9xms. It is about connections…which speaks to why you should attend Aspen.  Don’t ski or board and think there is nothing for you?  Half our group is just like you.  This year’s dates are December 13-16.  We have two host hotels, The St. Regis, Aspen and the Limelight Hotel and our room rates are insanely great.  Don’t wait, register today.

WHAT COLLEGE FRESHMEN KNOW…

August 21, 2012

This story made me feel old… thought it was worth passing on.  I was just going to copy it so you didn’t have to sit through the ads and then remembered that without permission, you can get in trouble…and someone is paying and being paid to produce this content so here is the link instead.  http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/48736648

Have a great day and evening.

SENSATION

August 8, 2012

Lately, Lefsetz has been writing about EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and how the major concert promoters, specifically Live Nation and AEG have been late to the party.  Recently I stumbled on Sensation, a dance music event making its first appearance in North America October 26 – 27 at the new arena in Brooklyn.  Check out these links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4Lk7ymHJiA , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYUeLnW-fqc

Sensation is making its way over from Europe and is being promoted by the Jason Miller and the Live Nation New York office.  It has production elements that rival U2 and the Stones (set pieces, Pyro, lasers, water, etc), has sold-out the Saturday night play and has less than 3000 tickets left for Friday night. Tickets are $150 and $250 (the 2000 $250 VIP tickets for each night are sold-out) and partygoers even have to follow a dress code…all white. The tickets have sold without even announcing a line-up.

Jason and Live Nation have been actively working in the dance music scene since 2008, set house records at Roseland for 6-consecutive sold-out deadmau5 parties (Jason makes a distinction that these are parties not shows or concerts) and have produced 40-50 EDM parties over the last three years.

Jason credits Andrew Dreskin (founder of Ticketfly) for turning him on to the scene (although he had been promoting dance music with the likes of the Chemical Brothers while still a young promoter in Vancouver) and Leon Ramakers of the Netherlands for introducing him to Sensation’s owners ID&T.  Over a long gestation period, Jason and Live Nation’s Perry Lavoisne developed a relationship with ID&T, even traveling to Belgrade to see one of their Sensation parties…eventually landing their two dates in New York.

The company sold-out their first EDM arena show with Swedish House Mafia at the Madison Square Garden last December which proved that fans would go to large capacity venues for the experience.

Sensation isn’t just another dance party though.  Miller says “it is a complete spectacle…that tells a story” as part of the experience.  He believes that this music has “changed his life” and has developed a unique relationship with the audience, going so far as to setup a separate phone line in the office just for EDM parties.  Jason personally calls each fan back that leaves a message and has taken his cues of developing these personal relationships from what the Grateful Dead had been doing for years in the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s.

EDM fans (like Dead Heads before them) are in the know.  Not just in terms of the music and DJ’s but even the best sound systems to use.  Funktion One Sound is something that has impact with partygoers and talent alike and is used to help market the events.

So one thing is for sure, EDM is here to stay, can play large venues at high ticket prices and if you aren’t in the game, it may be time to start brushing up.

WISDOM FROM SETH

July 26, 2012

In the last newsletter, I mentioned that marketing guru Seth Godin would be giving the Keynote at Pollstar’s conference early next year (Advertising Age named him Marketer of the Decade). Thought his post today was worth sharing with you.

Feet on the street

The complement to the brilliant strategy is the thankless work of lower-leverage detail.

An organization with feet on the street and alert and regular attention to detail can build more trust and develop better relationships than one than hits and runs.

  • Contact every user who stops using your service and find out why.
  • Create a newsletter for every journalist who covers your space, and deliver it every three weeks, even when you’re not asking for anything. Just to keep them in the loop.
  • Eagerly pay attention to people who mention you online and engage with them in a way that they prefer to be engaged.
  • Sponsor industry events and actually show up.
  • Write a thank you note every single day, to someone who doesn’t expect one.
  • Build your permission asset by 1% every day. Every day, 1% more people are eager and happy to hear from you.
  • Write a blog every day, not to sell, but to teach.
  • Connect people in your industry, because you enjoy it.
  • Host community meetings in your store.
  • Put a lemonade stand in front of your business and let the local kids donate the money to whatever charity they like.
  • Hand out free samples every chance you have.
  • Keep in touch with people who used to work with you and continue to help them get great gigs and new business, even years later.
  • Put together an honest buyer’s guide, pointing out in which instances your competitor’s products are a better choice.
  • Run classes for your customers.
  • Run classes for your competitors.
  • Build a recruiting pipeline that is in place more than a year before you need to hire someone.

None of this is sufficient. Your product and your strategy have to be brilliant. But a lot of it is necessary. Hearts and minds…

Pollstar Scores

The North American Concert Promoter’s Association has done it again.  In 2012 it was Moneyball.  For 2013 the group is sponsoring marketing guru Seth Godin for Pollstar’s annual conference. http://www.pollstarpro.com/live2013/subCheck.asp  Seth spoke at The Aspen Live Conference in 2004 and he was simply amazing.  You won’t want to miss this year’s event…or Aspen Live either for that matter.  Our dates are December 13-16 http://www.aspenlive.com.

Hope to see you all soon!
